About · Caterpillar 320Overview
The Caterpillar 320 is a 20-tonne hydraulic excavator, launched in 2018 as the Next Generation 320. It is powered by a Cat C7.1 ACERT engine producing 153 hp and features a 10-inch touchscreen cab, a hydraulic system with up to 25% fuel savings versus its predecessor, and factory-standard Grade 2D basic grade control. E-Fence boom lower and swing restrictor functions are included for safety on restricted urban sites.
Typical applicationsWhere this machine is used
Dutch utility contractors use the Cat 320 for water main and gas pipe replacement in road trenches. Belgian residential and commercial builders use it for foundation excavation and basement construction. German contractors use it for road, rail, and building site work. The factory-fitted Grade 2D system sets a minimum dig depth to prevent overexcavation, reducing rework time and material cost on precision foundation projects.
Used-market inspectionWhat to check before buying
Inspect the hydraulic main pump for contamination or excessive case drain flow. The Next Generation 320 pump configuration is more sensitive to oil quality than the prior 320D. Confirm the Cat Grade 2D system is calibrated and that tilt-bucket calibration is current if fitted. Check undercarriage tracks for even wear across the pad width. 600mm narrow pads fitted for road transport accelerate wear in heavy soil. Review VIMS history for recurring fault codes related to the emission-control system.
Current marketPrice position
The Cat 320 is one of the most liquid assets in the European used excavator market. It competes with the Komatsu PC210, Hitachi ZX210, and Volvo EC220. Pricing in NL/BE/DE is transparent due to the large transaction volume. The 2019–2023 Next Generation models command a premium over the older 320D series, reflecting technology advances and improved fuel economy.
