About · Caterpillar D5Overview
The Caterpillar D5 is a compact crawler bulldozer in the 13–16-tonne class, introduced in 2018. It is powered by a Cat C4.4 ACERT engine producing 130 hp. The D5 is available in standard-track, XW (extra-wide), and LGP configurations. Cat's Stable Blade load-sensing hydraulics is standard. The cab was revised from older D5 variants, with improved visibility and an integrated Cat Grade technology mounting point.
Typical applicationsWhere this machine is used
Small to medium civil engineering contractors, landscaping companies, and municipal works departments across Europe use the D5. In the Netherlands, the LGP variant is used for coastal and agricultural land drainage projects where compact dimensions allow access in areas closed to larger machines. Belgian and German contractors use standard-track D5 machines for residential and commercial site preparation, sub-base grading, and utility trench backfilling. Reduced operating weight allows transport on standard flatbed trailers without a heavy transport permit.
Used-market inspectionWhat to check before buying
As a 2018-onwards model, most used D5 machines have detailed service histories. Confirm the AdBlue/DEF system is functioning correctly. Tier 4 Final systems require regular SCR catalyst inspection. Inspect LGP track frames for lateral loading damage. Early production (2018–2019) machines had a software update for the hydrostatic drive control; confirm this has been applied before purchase.
Current marketPrice position
The D5 competes with the Komatsu D51PX and John Deere 750J in the compact dozer segment. Tier 4 Final compliance gives it unrestricted access to emission-controlled urban sites. Used D5 values are firm due to the young age of the available population and limited supply of low-hour machines. Demand from Dutch and Belgian municipal contractors has been consistent, particularly for LGP variants.
