About · Volvo EC220Overview
The Volvo EC220 is a 22-tonne class hydraulic excavator, produced since 2010 and currently in its EC220E generation. It is powered by a Volvo D6J engine producing 168 hp and operates a 1.0 m³ standard bucket with a maximum digging depth of 6.6 metres. CareTrack telematics is standard from the EC220D generation onwards. The machine is compatible with Volvo-approved tiltrotators for multi-angle precision work.
Typical applicationsWhere this machine is used
Dutch utility contractors use the EC220 for gas and water infrastructure replacement projects requiring long cab sessions. Belgian building contractors use it for foundation, underground parking, and basement excavation. The cab ergonomics and tiltrotator compatibility make it a regular choice for contractors who need multi-angle precision work without changing attachments.
Used-market inspectionWhat to check before buying
Inspect the hydraulic attachment circuit for leaks at quick-hitch connections, a common wear point on machines used with multiple attachments. Check swing gear oil level and condition; regular oil changes are sometimes skipped on contractor-maintained machines. Review CareTrack data for fault patterns and overtemperature events in the hydraulic system. Check the aftercooler for internal leaks, which can allow coolant contamination of intake air on higher-hour machines.
Current marketPrice position
The EC220 competes with the Komatsu PC210, Caterpillar 320, and Hitachi ZX210 in the 20-tonne class. The used EC220 market in the Netherlands is active, with a large installed base from major Dutch contractor fleets. Prices have been stable, with EC220D and E models from 2015–2023 in consistent demand. Tiltrotator-equipped machines command a premium of 8–15% above standard-equipped examples.
